With the amount of plugins, synths and samples available to electronic musicians, it often feels more overwhelming than inspiring. Sohn Jamal takes a different perspective on his latest independent release “Operator Folk.” Jamal's approach, as he describes it, is a testament to his creativity and skill as a songwriter. “I used the Inspired by Nature Bouncing Notes (Max4Live) device on like three of these” he told me via Instagram DM, “but the rest were entirely drawn in by midi - all the sounds are individual sounds from scratch on Operator (an Ableton Live staple, combining classic analog sounds and frequency modulation synthesis) thrown in to drum rack to be sequenced via piano roll.” Proving his ability to distill the complexities of digital music production into something coherent and compelling.
